This website is designed to offer advice and guidance to artists and organisations looking to develop international residencies and fellowships.
There can be a range of aims for a fellowship programme or project – click here to see the aims of the recent International Artists Fellowships programme run by Arts Council England
A fellowship programme or project will involve:
-A managing organisation, based either in the artist’s country or the host country – for example, a host organisation for an artist based in the UK could be the British Council in the UK or the British Council office in the country where the artist will be working
-One or more funding organisation(s), providing support for the project – again, a funding organisation could be based in either the artist’s country or the host country (it could even be the host organisation) Finding either or both of these may involve finding relevant intermediary bodies in either the artist's own country or the host country, and such intermediary bodies may also turn out to be funding organisations.
There is no single way of setting up these fellowships – it can depend on many factors – the artform, the situation in the artist’s country, the host country, the host organisation, etc.
If you are one of the other organisations who may be involved – as a host, a managing agency or a funding body, you will need to ensure you have the resources and capacity to deliver these fellowships. If you are seeking to initiate international fellowship opportunities, then you may also be seeking to develop relationships directly with potential host organisations, managing agencies or even funding bodies in other countries, either independently, or linked to existing relationships which you have or which may be relevant – e.g. twinning arrangements in which your city or town is already involved.
